The Founding Four
Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw, and Salazar Slytherin together founded Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry around 990 A.D. Each founder valued different traits in their students. Gryffindor prized courage and chivalry; Hufflepuff valued hard work, patience, and loyalty; Ravenclaw sought intelligence and creativity; and Slytherin favored ambition and resourcefulness.
The Art of Wandlore
As Garrick Ollivander often notes, 'The wand chooses the wizard.' Wandlore is a complex and mysterious branch of magic. Wands are typically composed of a wood (such as holly, vine, or elder) and a core of a powerful magical substance (like phoenix feather, dragon heartstring, or unicorn hair).
Defense Against the Dark Arts
Often referred to as DADA, this subject is a requirement for all students at Hogwarts. The curriculum covers a wide range of topics, including the identification of dark creatures and the mastery of defensive spells.
The International Statute of Wizarding Secrecy
Signed in 1689 and fully established by 1692, the Statute is the cornerstone of modern wizarding law. It mandates the concealment of magic from the non-magical population through concealment charms and memory modification.
